OmniFocus for iPhone: coming soon

posted by Linda on 06.10.08 @ 8:30 am

Well! After an invigorating morning yesterday watching the live WWDC coverage I think we’re all thinking the same thing: a script typeface, Apple? Really?

Oh, and apparently there’s been some iPhone announcements, something about 3D? I have to admit I got distracted by the awesome metal box. What’s in the box? What’s in the boooooooox?

(HER PRETTY HEAD!)

Anyway, we have our own bit of news, now that the Great App Store Reveal has officially taken place. As we mentioned back in March, we’ve been working on OmniFocus for the iPhone — a native, location-aware app with live, automatic sync and custom actions based on your whereabouts.

Behold: IT LIVES.

We’re still making some refinements, but OmniFocus for iPhone should be available on the App Store on or around launch time. Just one more reason to be counting down the days until July, people.

PS. Don’t forget, there’s an OmniFocus meetup tonight in S.F. at 6:30 PM. Come by and say hello if you’re in the area!

It’s… sniff… so beautiful!

Kudos on the great work on this one–I can’t wait to see what other iPhone tricks you guys might have up your sleeves.

This is very interesting. Will registered desktop OmniFocus users be able to get ahold of the iPhone version free of charge? Or will it be a separate license fee?

“Nothing!! Absolutely Nothing!”

Ha! Loooove the Se7en reference :D

Love the news of OF-iPhone more!

This is so amazing, so beautiful, I can hardly believe it. And if the “live sync” is what I think it is (includes over-the-air sync with MobileMe) then it’s like a secret dream comes true.

Too bad we still have to wait. I am going to freeze myself like Cartman did in South Park for the Wii.

Simply amazing! It’s going to be a *very* long 4 weeks.

Great news. Will this require the new 3G iPhone or just the new 2.0 iPhone software?

I can NOT wait for this to be released. You guys ROCK!!

BTW - I think the link for Screen Shot 2 (context mode) is broken on the product page. Looks like it might be missing the “www.omnigroup.com” at the front of the URL.

PS - I’ve tried to post a comment a few times and I keep getting a Wordpress error page about my user agent string having changed so I can’t post a comment. Not sure if there’s a problem on my end or yours, though.

There are some things we can’t address right now, but I can say that it runs nicely on the current (EDGE) iPhone. It will not require the 3G iPhone.

Just curious what the pricing will look like for this. Will it be free for users that already have OmniFocus for Mac OS X?

Yes, but will the to-do’s push a-la mobile me? Automatic sync? Plus Location aware services? OMG!

Ohhhhhh man, I’m pumped for this. Thanks for that tidbit, Ethan! WIsh I could meet you guys tonight, but I’m on the east coast, and the commute would be dreadful, heh.

I’m LOVING the location-based contexts. I’m eager to get under the covers and see how you’re determining what else is near — this is something that I’ve been wanting for a long, long time :D

@Ethan - great to hear it’ll work on original iPhones. I think OmniFocus is going to get a lot more use!

I’d love to upgrade to the new iPhone but I don’t have 3G where I live. :(

Assuming this will be available on launch of the App store it will be the first thing I download (buy?).

My internal iPhone 3G debate…

Man, when Uncle Steve announced the iPhone 3G the other day I was hooked, again. I saw 3G on an iPhone and a low price point and I decided to get one as soon as I could. My wife almost immediately told me I couldn’t have one but I was sure I wo…

Will this work on the iPod Touch? Can’t see why most of it shouldn’t, although I doubt the location aware stuff will run.

First thing I will download when the app store opens.

Hmm, to answer my own question I’ve just found this:

Beauty! Can’t wait to have it on my iPhone. Any comment’s on how sync will be implemented with mobileme.com now that it ain’t mac.com anymore? It feels like the mobileme.com webapp has a lot of space for more Ajax apps in the applications bar (maybe an OF online app?). Com’on guys, leak some developer-only inside info!!!

Cheers

What about the new .mac? Any way this can help make it easier to use (share data) OmniFocus on my desktop and laptop?

I wanted to remind Omni to include the iPod Touch in its vocabulary when talking about this software. The Touch is the iPhone those of us who don’t like talking (or, at least, don’t like talking on AT&T).

Apple’s “Back to School” program over the summer is giving a rebate of up to $299 for either an iPod Nano or iPod Touch with the purchase of a computer; the Touch is the no-brainer of those choices. All of those people will have both a Mac and a Touch — perfect customers for OmniFocus!

Not everybody knows: when Leonado DiCarpio’s character said “I’m the king of the world!” in the movie Titanic, he had an iPod Touch in his right hand.

This is why I bought Omni Focus. This is THE reason I have an iPhone.

I’m curious how the Location Awareness feature will work for Gen1 iPhones. The Location feature currently places me across lake Washinton on Mercer Island when I’m at home in Madrona (Seattle) .

No more @home chores? Sweet! Play Time!

This probably deserves its own blog post, but I thought I’d just quickly note that OmniFocus just won an Apple Design Award for Best iPhone Productivity Application!

Can you please give us some tips on how to organize our data so as to best utilize the location aware features? Thanks

Sounds excellent! Plus (for those with iPhones & Macs), the syncing feature of OmniFocus for iPhone makes the anticipated feature of OmniFocus syncing between Macs somewhat less urgent. You are still working on syncing between Macs, right…?

It is as hard for me to get excited about software paper tigers as it is Dubya’s pretend energy policy–both are vapor for now. So…
Does this mean desktop OF will sync via MobileMe/ .Mac as well?
How much extra will it cost? $0.99 from the iTunes Store or more?
When for both?

I’ve read a few comments about syncing, and the feeling that desktop Mac syncing has taken a back seat to iPhone syncing (which may or may not be true), but the long and short is that OmniFocus is very useful on my Mac, but it will change my workflow and productivity in ways I can barely imagine right now once I’ve got access to it on my iPhone.

Laptop to desktop syncing will be great - I’m looking forward to that - but Mac to iPhone syncing will make OmniFocus a killer app for me.

Are we there yet? How about now?
