Brand New Secret Product no longer a secret

Project management has been called the ability to create the impossible, with the unwilling, against insurmountable odds, under budget and on time.

That’s actually a pretty good description of our process for creating Brand New Secret Product.

(Well…sort of.)

Introducing OmniPlan. Our brand new project management application.

OPicon.jpg

(Totally not an inkwell!)

Please stay tuned, folks! We’re shooting to release a public beta of OmniPlan next Wednesday, July 26th.

Wow! This looks great!

…counting down the minutes til the public beta is available…

Woo-Hoo!

Just today I was thinking how nice it would be to enter the next release cycle with a decent project planning software to aid me.

Was I really that off the mark??

Anyway, I can’t wait. I’m certainly hoping this is going to be leaps ahead of MS Office’s horrible (and non-Universal) Project Manager.

I’m not sure I get it… so is the Oni sequel built-in to the project management somehow?? OK, yeah, I think I’m seeing it now. It will only let you play the next level if you get your work done! Sweeet.

I don’t care about the app, but… WTF is that icon… Geez. Terrible.

Great news! We need something like MS Project (only better) on the Mac. The icon, I guess, represents the game piece of a person b/c project mgt. means managing the people who complete the tasks. I’m not fond of the color scheme, but I can get over it.

I just pray that it has a web-based portion of it to allow us to work with those less fortunate (eg, Windows users.)

That’s not a game piece, nor does it represent a human, that is obviously a “Resource”.

Time for you guys to get a clear understanding of Project Management in action. Quick take a memo.

http://www.fatalexception.org/action_item.html

I was lucky enough to get invited to the private beta, and from the standpoint of a professional project manager, I have to give this little product a ringing endorsement!

Not only does it add the Omni ease-of-use and elegance to the world of Gantting, but it also adds some phenomenal groupware capabilities by publishing full project plans to the web, along with .ics calendars for every “resource” to take advantage of!

Awesome stuff. Can’t wait to see it go final!

Dangit! Crap!

…days of saying “is it iPhoto,” down the drain…

Gotta start spending every waking moment endlessly refreshing this dang page…

What were the requirements of getting in on the private beta? I have built several web-based project management apps…

I must be an Omni Fanboy because I like the icon. I only wish this was around last December when I was in a Process Analysis class. I can’t wait to see it. I have a serious love afair with everything else Omni.

I bet that omniplan will be far far away for the reference of project planning software Primavera Project Management ! Good Luck !

http://www.primavera.com/

Let’s see if it’s better than Merlin: http://www.projectwizards.net/en/merlin/

I hope so, because I like Omni-products.

I don’t know what the non-inkwell is on the icon, but I like the Gantt chart.

Frightening, frightening timing. I was thinking earlier today that I needed a good Mac project management app.

I need to put my tin foil hat back on…

OmniPlan is a full professsional implementation, top flight stuff as usual from the gang at Omni. I plan on adding it to my toolkit for sure, and em…I have a genesis of a kGTD workflow going.

I like the way the guys and gals at Omni have essentially developed the other productivity suite…

[...] Well, the cat’s out of the bag folks. OmniPlan is the name of that now not-so-super-secret new piece of software from Omni Group. As the name oh-so-subtly suggests, OmniPlan does project planning, complete with Gant charts and whatever else you project planning people do. I’m not quite sure what all of the features do, as I have zero background in project planning, but it’s sure pretty! OmniPlan has been in private beta for about a week, and a public beta will be released on Wednesday. [...]

[...] Seems the fine folks over at The Omni Mouth have untied the tongue and mentioned the soon-to-be released OmniPlan. OmniPlan is a project management tool that is being hyped as “Project management made painless”. [...]

Looks like a nice product, but I don’t see how one can use it to order a gorilla mask or make a dog bark on command.

[...] The announcement of OmniPlan makes my previous post about GTD-on-steriods both true and false. The world is so not boolean. [...]

I for one want a good Planning app but I do hope its has ease of use first and foremost - I’m not a programmer and have found the other mac planning apps (merlin etc) either too complex, too focused on software dev or just down right ugly! I hope this is the one for me!

Great. But I wish it was a Quicken-like app like someone else mentioned earlier. Any chance Omni might be interested in doing that?

Rock on. As a professional PM I’m quite excited to get in on the public beta of this. Ever since ProjectX fell off the planet I’ve been waiting for a good PM app so I can put way my copy of Microsloth Project I run through Parallels.

Jason, yeah - a HUMAN resource

Is this an app to compete with Process 2?

hmm OmniPlan, iBiz, Lightspeed, etc… there are a few mentioned here… i look forward to seeing more cocoa.. and the Creators of OmniWeb, OmniGraffle and OmniOutliner should do a pretty good work here

OmniPlan…

The icon’s not that bad—but you do need a more realistic inkwell. Also, the inkwell and the paper are in two different sets of perspective, so the inkwell isn’t immediately recognizable as an object.

An inkwell might not be the best object to represent project management, though. What about Post-it notes or Polaroid pictures. At least you’d have the alliteration thing going.

That’s no inkwell…it’s a pawn!

It’s the robber from “Settlers of Catan”!

Please tell me this isn’t the gtd application omni hinted at earlier.

You are correct, this is _not_ the GTD app we hinted at.

Thanks for the quick response. Nothing against this app, looks great. Just looking forward to a more personal gtd app. Can’t wait.

It would be really cool if it integrated with the open source dotProject online project management software ( http://www.dotproject.net/ )

Christopher Davis got it exactly right — we modeled the resource playing-piece on the Catan robber from the very beginning! :D

Note that this doesn’t imply any performance claims that OmniPlan will be especially useful for organizing teams of thieves to purloin bricks on small islands…

Drat! I guessed it on TUAW’s forums, but failed to mention it here. Any chance I can get an early invite as well?

BTW, I’ve used Omni software almost DAILY since 2000 (early user of OmniOutliner 2) and love it. Can’t wait to see what is in store!!

I’d say it’s a “Stamp of Approval”

Hmmm. I’m a *huge* fan of Outliner and Graffle, but over the last 6 months or so I’ve grown fond of Merlin for project mgmt. Of course, I picked Merlin because nothing else worthwhile existed. And now Omni (reverent pause) steps into the ring? Looking forward to trying them both side by side…

And here I was hoping for a decent CSS editor for the Macintosh…

http://www.activecollab.com. Nuff said

I’m personally very excited by the announcement and will certainly be checking out the beta when it is available. If the product incorporates the usual excellent Omni product design, allows me to perform the core project management tasks (task scheduling, resource planning, reporting, etc.) and includes compatibility with MS Project (the standard application in my company) then I’m sold already.

[...] OmniPlan - nowy produkt od Omni Group. OmniPlan jest aplikacją do zarządzania projektami. W środę ma pojawić się publiczna beta projektu. Ciekawe jak zniesie porównanie do BaseCamp. [...]

I will be happy if it can do half as much as MacProject Pro. Really miss MPP, was excellent at actual project management assistance. MS Project is largely a vertical market project charting tool, and has little more than Adobe Illustrator for actually managing time/resource critical path impact analysis.

Thank you for wasting my time by making an announcement which provides absolutely no information beyond the name of the product.

[...] For creative professionals and projet managers who work on Macs, the lack of decent project management software is quite frustrating. Most are complicated, ugly, and painful. OmniGroup, the makers of fine applications such as OmniOutliner and OmniGraffle, has just announced OmniPlan, a new application they describe as “project management made painless.” [...]

I am truly excited by this announcement. I have used AEC and was about to purchase a Merlin license (good grief it is lovely) when I heard. Since I am not in the private beta and don’t know what it offers allow me to spout a wish list.

1) As many import and export options as possible. I am always looking for the best way to present the information I produce in a PM program.

2) Hooks! If you were righting this program for me you would have a DayLite (Marketcircle) hook that supercharges there “Project” function. But being able to tie into Quickbooks to sequence the most important resource ($) is crucial as well.

3) Reports! This is of course a management tool, but I have always been struck at how few management reports are available. As easy as it is to track resource utilization, I should be able to track cash flows and IRR for a project.

Thanks for letting me vent.

If someone really need a planner better MS-Projekct give this german product a chance. Top End Software in my mind.
Merlin no question:

http://www.projectwizards.net/en/

This is certainly cool news, but I think it would be very foolish to not integrate with the Basecamp API… I don’t know if you will not not, I’m just saaaaying ;-)

Looking forward to the beta!

[...] I have been looking for some Mac based project management software and was not terribly happy with what I was finding. Good news just showed up, I found out that one of my favorite software companies is about to unveil a new project management program for the Mac: OmniPlan. These guys always seem to get things right. I just have to wait for a few more days for the public beta. If you are a Mac user be sure to check out the incredibly useful: OmniOutliner. [...]

I’m still mourning the loss of MacProject… loved it. I hope this is similar.

Basecamp is my favourite web app, but OmniGraffle is my favourite desktop app. This will be very interesting to try out!

I’ve checked out the Basecamp API, and we have bugs filed in our tracking system for supporting import/export/update in and out of Basecamp. The feature won’t be in OmniPlan version 1.0, but it is definitely something I’d like to do eventually.

Sounds good, will it be anything like Copper Project which is probably the best looking/functioning project management app (but it is web-based)? Also what kind of price point are we talking?

OmniPlan - Project Management Made Easy!…

This is exciting news for all you Mac users out there. All the best web developers and project managers DO use Macs and not Windows, correct? :-)
I’m a huge fan of the Omni Groups other products, so I’m really looking forward to this Proje…

Anyone know how this compares to the announced but delayed http://www.projectx.com?

Ah! dang… I was hoping for a full blown spreadsheat application.

i am looking forward to using your product!
Anyways, the macsphere doesn’t seem to plan to support korean or other unicode languages. of course osx can support the lnaguage, but not as enough as windows’ invincible IME settings.

if you are willing to dominate office and home environemnt, please think about users from outer countries which are out of A,B,C languages :)

[...] OmniGroup had announced their new product, OmniPlan which will be released as beta on Wednesday the 26th of July. Rumor has it that Ethan from kGTD fame has had a finger in the development of this new product. Really looking forward to this app for doing project management for our LightSpeed app. Its exciting to see lots of new business apps coming out for OS X!

If it is not an inkwell, is it a rubber stamp :) ?

I use OmniOutliner all day every day at work, but need some more traditional project management functionality. So, Really Looking Forward to This!

There is a replacement for Microsoft proje ct on the mac and it reads project file it’s fasttrack schedule

come on!!! don’t leave us haning!!!!! please realleas the BATA!!!!!!

Nah, the little black guy is one of those armless, legless PlaySkool people.

But I still don’t quite get it…how is OmniPlan supposed to let me draw and manipulate images? This is really OmniDraw in disguise, right? Right? Please? Oh, fine, I’ll go write the program myself.

So, OmniPlan == Oni2 ?

my pointer was over the “buy” button, in the Merlin site, when I read the news… I’ll wait some days more!

So what’s all this about a kGTD app?

“Jason, yeah - a HUMAN resource
By C. Lee Smith on 07.22.06 8:32 am’

Take it easy Lee. I was making fun of BAD PM’s out there. I’ve suffered through several. They never though of Resources as human.

A good project management tool has keep many people I talked to away from the mac. I think Omni’s sales are set to skyrocket with this app.

I wanted our WWDC t-shirts to have “fungible resource” on the sleave instead of “staff”, but apparently I was in the minority.

What about iTaskX? Very clean interface. Very nice product. Lacking the PR machine. Just 65€.

Of course it isn’t an inkwell. It is a Lego(tm) version of the Spectre of Death, hovering near ALL project plans.

Concerning jtechsoftworks: they redirected me to Omniplan.

An interview with Greg Titus, lead developer for Omni Plan is posted on CocoaRadio:
